STUDENT EXTERNSHIPS & JOB SHADOWING

 

Student Information

  • We are happy to host students who have an interest in livestock animals for shadowing or externships. Due to increased interest we may not be able to accommodate everyone, as we typically try to host one student at a time. Applications links are at the bottom of the page.

  • Who can apply:

    • Veterinary Students

      • Priority on dates go to 4th year veterinary students

      • ​Typically accept 2-3 week long rotations, further discussion needed for longer​​

      • Housing may be provided if needed

    • Undergraduate Students

      • Shadow for more experience before applying to veterinary school

      • Duration can vary

    • Veterinary technician & nurse students

      • Limited spots, typically 1 week, no more than 2 weeks​

    • High school students over 16 yrs of age with parental permission​​

  • The degree of participation will depend on level of experience

  • For high school and undergraduate students we may initially start with 1-3 days for a ride-a-long before committing to further time.

What to Bring

  • Washable boots​

  • Coveralls, bibs, waterproof clothing (we have limited supplies students can borrow)

  • Stethoscope (if you have one)

  • Snacks and a lunch

  • Phones are not allowed to be used during the day unless veterinarian/producers approve

A Typical Day 

  • Students will have the opportunity to observe and assist the veterinarians on farm and at our clinic. Our case loads can vary depending on time of year so we can help you plan when to come based off of your interests.

​

Your experience may include but is not limited to:

  • Daily rectal palpation for pregnancy with and without ultrasound on dairies ranging from 50 to 5000 cows (veterinary students)

  • Vaccination and treatment of youngstock

  • Nutrition and general health consultation

  • Sick cow diagnosis and treatment 

  • Obstetrical assistance

  • Lame cow corrective trimming and treatment

  • Preventative medicine herd strategies

  • Parlor evaluation and milker training

  • Small ruminant and backyard swine treatments

  • Surgical procedures such as LDA, RDA, C-section, enucleation, lacerations and more

  • Students who have an interest in advanced theriogenology can shadow and assist our two veterinarians who do embryo transfer within the practice

Externship workload: 84% Dairy, 11% Beef Cattle, 4% Small Ruminant, <1% Swine
